Normally a film about a couple getting married isn't the sort of thing that would interest me even if it was produced by A24 but the trailer did a great job of making us ask what the thing that Zendaya’s character did that was so bad. The set up of the film is that Robert Pattinson plays Charlie and Zendaya plays Emma who are just about to get married and when they are at meal tasting session with their friends they talk about the worst thing they have done and Emma says that when she was 15 she planned but did not carry out a school shooting. Her friend and maid of honour’s cousin was a victim in a school shooting so doesn't take the news well and the rest of the film is about the fallout and how Charlie reacts to the news and also how we as the viewer would react to this revelation.
The film works because of Zendaya and Pattinson. They have very good chemistry together and Zendaya in particular does very well in making a flawed and vulnerable character seem quite likeable. Out of all the characters that are in this film it is Emma that seems to be going through the ringer because of something she did when she was 15 (practically a different person). Charlie’s reaction is understandable because it is quite an important bombshell to hear about the woman you are marrying in a few days. Once he hears the context that it happened then he is a bit more understanding even though he hasn't fully come to terms with it as he has a moment with someone he works with.I can't quite make my mind up about Robert Pattinson but I thought he was rather good in this. He comes across as someone who is completely lost with trying to figure out what is the right thing to do.
The wedding speech did make this film seem like it was more of a black comedy than I was expecting. It seemed like everything that could go wrong did go wrong and I don't know how long that whole part went on for but it was completely engaging and a brilliantly
I enjoyed this film. The revelation was shocking because it was something that wasn't clear cut. We always go through what would we do if…. ? and most of the time its harmless but I think that the film works also because it asks us how we would react and I honestly think that as it was so long ago when she was a different person and clearly doesn't think like that anymore then she should be given the benefit.
I think that this was a film that worked because the bombshell wasnt ruined in the trailer and I wasnt aware of it beforehand. I would like to watch it again knowing what I know to see if the film has the same effect on me. That is when I know its a good film
